The Green Tariff for Exporters: Navigating Carbon Border Adjustments
The introduction of data collection and reporting obligations for embedded carbon emissions in carbon intensive goods entering the EU is now underway, with the U.K announcing it will also join EU efforts in a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. While just a small number of Australian and New Zealand exports will be impacted, from 1 January 2026, producers will be required to pay a levy on the direct and indirect emissions embedded in these products.
Guidance has been issued on the new obligations and we are already discussing methods for calculating embedded carbon with exporter clients who may be affected. This ‘green tariff’ has the ability to transform how countries and companies approach international trade in the context of climate change.
